What Defines You?

What are some of the things that define who you are?
Your job?
Where you live?
The type of school your children go to?
The car you drive?
The clothes you wear?
How much money you have?
All the "little" things in our life are part of who we are.
While these things in and of themselves are not bad, they should not be what gives our life it's entire meaning.

The meaning of define in Webster's Dictionary:
1. to determine or identify the essential qualities or meaning of
2. Characterize, Distinguish

Our worth or value is not based on the things of this world, but in Christ who lives in us. So often in my life, I let circumstances dictate my contentment or worth. God is the same before a trial occurs and He's the same after. He is the only constant in my life. He NEVER changes.

I received a a fantastic book "A Year with C.S. Lewis". Lewis is a deep thinker and I have contemplated a few of the experts this week. One that really stuck out to me is titled,
"Blurry Visions of God".

"When you come to knowing God, the initiative lies on His side. If He does not show Himself, nothing you can do will enable you to find Him. And, in fact, He shows much more of Himself to some people that to others, not because He has favorites, but because it is impossible for Him to show Himself to a man whose whole mind and character are in the wrong condition. Just as sunlight, though it has no favorites, cannot be reflected in a dusty mirror as clearly as in a clean one.
You can put this another way by saying that while in other sciences the instruments you use are the things external to yourself (things like microscopes and telescopes), the instrument through which you see God is your whole self. And if a man's self is not kept clean and bright, his glimpse of God will be blurred- like the Moon seen through a dirty telescope. That is why horrible nations have horrible religions: they have been looking at God through a dirty lens."

What do you think?

  1. I think my "mirror" needs a lot of cleaning. Thank you for your insight dear friend. I am missing you.
